A new type of vessel appears in a sensitive area
A Chinese fishing vessel identified as part of Beijing's maritime militia was detected more than 30 nautical miles off Hualien on Taiwan's Pacific coast, according to a surveillance report reviewed by Reuters. The August sighting is the first known identification of such a craft in the area.
The report named the vessel as Minfudingyu 07902 and placed it near a Chinese coast guard cutter and a research ship. Radar images, infrared imagery and automatic-identification data documented the cluster, but a single surveillance pass could not establish the vessels' missions or prove operational coordination among them.
Taiwan treats the activity as part of blockade preparation
Taiwanese officials confirmed to Reuters that the three vessels operated near the island in mid-August and said the fishing boat belonged to China's maritime militia fleet. Taiwan's defence ministry described the broader activity as harassment conducted under the cover of law enforcement and scientific research.
The eastern approaches matter because Taiwan regards them as potential supply corridors for outside assistance during a blockade or conflict. Chinese coast guard and other state-linked vessels have increased activity there since June, extending pressure beyond the more closely watched Taiwan Strait.

Civilian hulls complicate the security picture
China's maritime militia consists of fishing vessels and crews that receive training or support to operate alongside official forces. The fleet is more commonly associated with disputed areas of the South China Sea, where its civilian appearance can make attribution and proportional responses more difficult.
The Hualien detection does not show that a blockade is under way. It does, however, indicate that the mix of military, coast guard, research and militia assets seen elsewhere around China's maritime claims may be expanding into waters east of Taiwan.
Daily monitoring continues around the island
In its separate October 8 daily update, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said it detected three Chinese military aircraft, six naval ships and one official vessel around the island during the preceding 24 hours. One aircraft entered Taiwan's southwestern air-defence identification zone.
Those daily figures do not independently verify the August militia sighting. They provide current context for the persistent multi-agency activity Taiwan says it is tracking with aircraft, naval vessels and coastal missile systems. Beijing did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment on the surveillance report.
