Emergency funding follows Friday’s earthquake

Panama declared a national emergency on Saturday, October 10, following Friday’s powerful earthquake. EFE reported that the decision allows authorities to channel up to $100 million toward the response. The presidency confirmed that an extraordinary cabinet session led by President José Raúl Mulino approved the emergency.

The declaration applies to consequences of the earthquake. Emergency resources are an authorized ceiling, rather than a statement that the entire amount has already been spent.

Schools and access roads are being assessed

The presidency’s preliminary assessment listed 426 evaluated homes with damage, 419 affected educational centers and 21 health facilities. Officials said aid and access-road inspections were concentrated in Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas. Nine road bridges had structural concerns; the Bridge of the Americas and Centennial Bridge remained open and unaffected.

Education officials expected to announce by Sunday whether classes could resume nationally or in particular regions. Housing assessments will determine which families can safely return and where repairs or reconstruction are needed.

Preliminary figures may change

EFE and AP reported at least 27 injured people and no reported deaths. The presidency’s earlier account listed about 21 people treated for injuries. These are separate preliminary snapshots, and the higher total should not be read as a final assessment.

Earthquake magnitude estimates also differ: EFE cited a US Geological Survey estimate of 7.7, while the presidency used 7.5. Damage assessments and aftershock monitoring remain ongoing. File photographs accompanying this report show the affected region and transport infrastructure before the earthquake, rather than documenting current damage.
