AI investments face a borrowing-cost squeeze
U.S. stocks fell on October 14 as an acceleration in inflation raised expectations of higher interest rates, putting shares tied to artificial intelligence under pressure.
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 511.51 points, or 1.9%, to 26,692.87. The S&P 500 fell 86.51 points, or 1.1%, to 7,718.94, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.1% to 51,621.48, according to the Associated Press.
The prospect of more expensive borrowing weighed on the companies building AI data centres, AP reported. Their expansion depends on substantial investment, making financing costs part of the market’s assessment of future returns.

The retreat extends beyond technology
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies also declined 1.9%. Bank of America fell after earnings came in below analysts’ expectations, adding another source of pressure.
For the S&P 500, it was the fifth decline in six sessions since reaching a record. Even after the retreat, the index remained 12.8% higher for the year; the Nasdaq was up 14.8%.
