A sharp upgrade to the goods outlook
The World Trade Organization raised its forecast for global merchandise trade growth in 2026 to 3.9%, more than double the 1.9% projection it issued in March. It also lifted its 2027 forecast to 4.1%, according to the organization's latest outlook reported by the Associated Press and Folha de S.Paulo.
Merchandise trade grew 3.5% by volume in the first half. The revision arrived despite war-driven disruption to energy, transport and fertilizer markets, showing how strongly technology investment and rerouted supply chains supported the headline figure.
Chips and servers supplied nearly half the lift
Demand for AI-enabling goods including semiconductors, servers and networking equipment accounted for 47% of the increase in global merchandise trade value during the first half of 2026, the WTO said. Trade in those products rose 67% from a year earlier.
The boom is unusually trade-intensive. Data centers and AI infrastructure rely on cross-border supply chains for advanced chips, memory, networking hardware and power equipment, so each wave of investment generates more imports than many forms of domestic construction.

Supply routes softened the Middle East shock
Middle East liquefied natural gas exports fell 47% in the first half and crude oil exports dropped by about 24%, according to the WTO figures. Alternative suppliers limited the decline in global export volumes to roughly 1% for LNG and 6% for crude.
The adjustment did not remove the costs. The WTO cut its 2026 commercial-services growth forecast from 4.8% to 3.3%, with transport and travel particularly exposed to higher fuel costs, airspace restrictions and geopolitical tension.
A resilient forecast with concentrated risks
The upgrade signals resilience, not immunity. AI-related products now carry an outsized share of trade growth, so a slowdown in technology investment would quickly weaken the outlook. Persistent energy prices and further interruptions to shipping routes remain additional risks.
The forecast measures trade volume rather than an even improvement across economies or sectors. Europe is expected to remain comparatively weak, while regions outside the leading AI supply chain receive less of the direct boost.
