National mourning follows the Ondo crash

Nigeria declared three days of national mourning on October 5 after a military aircraft crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda, Ondo State. President Bola Tinubu also directed flags to be lowered to half-mast, according to a statement from the presidency.

The State House said the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos. It identified the plane as a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42. Tinubu directed the Air Force to investigate the cause. The statement said the victims’ names would be released after their families had been contacted.

Rescue reports preceded the mourning announcement

The Associated Press independently reported the crash and the same passenger and crew totals, citing Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and the Air Force. Its earlier account described a search-and-rescue operation and said casualties had not yet been confirmed at that stage.

The later presidential announcement explicitly mourns personnel who died. Those accounts reflect different points in a developing response. This report does not turn the number aboard into an independently verified final death toll: the official mourning statement reviewed does not give a separate final casualty count.

Investigators must establish what happened

The crash is a serious loss for Nigeria’s armed forces and the affected families. The investigation, rather than witness impressions or speculation about the aircraft, must establish the sequence of events and any contributing failures. None of the sources reviewed provides a completed investigation or verified cause.
