Volantis secures Series A backing

Semiconductor startup Volantis announced an $88 million Series A financing round on October 1, co-led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures. Reuters independently reported the financing and the company’s plan to connect computing and memory chips using light.

In its announcement, Volantis says the money will support development of A-1, an AI inference system, and expansion of its engineering team. The company targets initial customer deliveries in 2027. That date is a plan, not a completed shipment.

Optical links for pooled AI memory

Volantis describes an optical fabric that would connect multiple memory chips into a shared pool. Its proposed interconnect uses small vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, or VCSELs. The intended benefit is to increase both the amount of accessible memory and the speed of moving data to computation.

Those descriptions come from the developer of the technology. They explain what the company is building; they do not establish that every advertised performance target has been achieved.

Performance and deployment remain unverified

INCE NEWS has not independently benchmarked A-1. The reviewed announcement does not establish commercial-scale reliability or customer operating costs through independent tests. Funding also does not guarantee a product will arrive on its target schedule.

Investment shifts attention to memory connections — analysis

The investment reflects interest in the connections around AI processors as well as the processors themselves. The meaningful next evidence will be working systems, reproducible measurements and customer deployment. Until then, the financing is a documented business event and the promised performance remains a proposition to test.
