Switzerland’s federal health statement was checked against AP and Reuters reporting. Nigerian contact-monitoring and clinical updates are attributed to officials through those reports. The patient’s route of infection remains unresolved.
Treatment in Geneva, isolation in Zurich
A woman infected with Ebola was medically evacuated from Nigeria to Switzerland on October 26 and is receiving treatment at Geneva University Hospitals, Swiss health authorities said. Her husband, identified as a close contact, is in isolation at University Hospital Zurich.
Both are Swiss citizens and arrived on a medical evacuation flight. The Federal Office of Public Health identified the infection as Bundibugyo ebolavirus and said the situation posed no risk to Switzerland’s population.
Geneva and Zurich have served as reference hospitals for infections such as Ebola since 2019, with isolation infrastructure and trained staff, the office said.
Contact monitoring continues in Nigeria
Nigerian authorities are continuing to monitor 52 other contacts, AP reported. Health Minister Muhammad Pate said the patient had improved significantly and was stable and able to communicate, while stressing that improvement did not mean she was no longer infectious.
Her husband had shown no symptoms, officials said. Isolation of a close contact is distinct from a confirmed diagnosis.
How the woman became infected remains under investigation. Reuters reported that Africa CDC experts would travel to Nigeria to examine the case; its director said her travel documents showed no visit to Congo.
