AP’s account, read through ABC News, was compared with Reuters reporting of Machado’s return and her team’s plans. The reports independently describe her appearance in Lara; no arrival in Caracas or agreement on an election timetable is asserted here.
A public appearance in Lara
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado returned to the country on October 25, appearing at a church in Lara state after more than ten months abroad. AP and Reuters described supporters welcoming her; her team said she would continue towards Caracas by road.
Her return brings her campaign for a presidential election back inside Venezuela. She had left secretly in December 2025 after spending months in hiding, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.
The election timetable remains unresolved
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime ally of Nicolás Maduro, has governed with US backing since American forces removed Maduro in January. AP reported that her initial 90-day appointment had elapsed without the National Assembly voting to extend it, and that no election had been scheduled.
Machado and her allies want a date for a presidential vote. US officials have instead emphasized stabilizing the economy and rebuilding institutions, including the courts and electoral council, before elections.
Reuters reported that talks between a faction of the opposition and the interim government exclude Machado’s movement. Her adviser David Smolansky said she plans to meet families of political prisoners and other democratic leaders while working for an election date.
