Reporting Notes

The Senegalese Press Agency (APS) reported the opening ceremony began at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium on Oct. 31; the Associated Press independently reported that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open. A first for Olympic sport in Africa

The Youth Olympic Games opened in Senegal on Saturday, bringing the Olympic movement’s first sporting event on African soil to the country. The ceremony took place at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, outside Dakar. Senegal’s Press Agency reported that it had begun; the Associated Press reported that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open.

The competition runs through Nov. 13 across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The International Olympic Committee expects about 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 to take part in 25 sports and 153 medal events.

Competition started before the ceremony

The opening spectacle was not the first event on the schedule. Baseball5, a fast-paced five-a-side version of baseball played without bats or gloves, began on Friday, Oct. 30. The programme also includes beach wrestling, a sport closely associated with Senegal, and Wushu, a Chinese martial art.

Dakar was originally due to host the Youth Games in 2022, but Senegal and the IOC postponed them during the COVID-19 disruption. The IOC’s media guide says the 2026 edition is the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games, following events in Singapore, Nanjing and Buenos Aires.

The IOC says the programme has full gender balance across every sport, discipline and event. For Senegal, that makes the first African Olympic host a showcase of both sporting access and local capacity, not just a two-week competition.

A wider test of access and representation

The event also brings six athletes from the Youth Refugee Olympic Team to a Youth Games for the first time, according to the AP. They are based in Kenya and Uganda and are competing in athletics, judo and taekwondo.

Russia’s 13-member delegation is competing under its national flag at an Olympic event for the first time since the country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the AP reported. That return adds a political dimension to the competition, even as the Games put the focus on young athletes and Senegal’s ability to stage an international event.

The celebration comes as Senegal faces high debt and pressure over living costs. AP reported that analysts have warned the country will need dependable funding to maintain facilities after the Games; the opening is a milestone, but its legacy will depend on whether venues continue to serve athletes and communities.
