AP and CNN independently reported the staffing changes and cited US officials. The underlying intelligence was not independently assessed by INCE NEWS; the threat assessment is attributed to US authorities. Photographs show the State Department headquarters in earlier years.
Smaller teams, embassies still open
The United States is reducing personnel at its embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates following warnings of threats to American personnel, AP and CNN reported on October 24. The four posts remain open under restricted operations.
AP reported that personnel in those four countries were not compelled to depart, unlike nonessential US staff and their families in Saudi Arabia, who were ordered to leave on October 21. US officials denied that the reductions were tied to possible new US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Staffing can change without a new status
A State Department official told CNN that the four embassies would have temporary staffing adjustments within their existing restricted-operations status. The official said staffing in Kuwait and Bahrain was unchanged. This means a smaller diplomatic presence does not necessarily signify a change in an embassy’s formal operating status.
CNN reported that an October 23 intelligence memo warned of increased Iranian efforts to target US personnel. An American official said both Houthi threats and alleged Iranian plots were informing staffing decisions. These are US intelligence assessments, not independently established accounts of an imminent attack.
The movements also created practical problems for diplomatic families. The American Foreign Service Association told CNN that some families had only recently returned to their posts and faced uncertainty over relocation support. A State Department official subsequently said direct-hire personnel and families would receive lodging, school and per-diem assistance consistent with applicable government rates.
