Reporting Notes

Polish Radio 24 reports the National Prosecutor’s Office statement that the Kraków shooting is being investigated as an offence of a terrorist nature and that evidence points to the same suspect in three deaths in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. The Prosecutor’s Office statement was posted on X; a full case file was not available. Kraków’s city account says 15 people were injured; the prime minister’s office reports 16 wounded, including the suspect, so the figures are presented with their different scopes. The early statements about far-right influence are attributed to officials and are not a finding about motive. The photos are archive context: the Main Market Square on May 7, 2021, and a police patrol there in August 2007; neither shows the Nov. 7 attack.

Six people were killed in the city centre

Six people were killed when a gunman opened fire in Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday, Nov. 7. The city said 15 people were injured. The prime minister’s office reported 16 wounded, including the suspect, who was shot by police and detained.

The attack began shortly after 3 p.m. local time, according to the city and the prime minister’s office. Two police officers were seriously injured during the exchange of fire, the government said. The National Prosecutor’s Office said its case covers the killing of six people and attempted killings of others, including officers.

Prosecutors apply a terrorism-offence classification

On Sunday, the National Prosecutor’s Office said the case was being investigated as an offence of a terrorist nature. The statement, reported by Polish Radio 24, also said prosecutors were investigating the deaths of three people found in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, about 150 kilometres northeast of Kraków. The evidence indicated the same person was responsible, the office said.

The prime minister’s office said the three people were found dead at the suspect’s home and were believed to be close relatives. Reuters separately reported that a prosecutor described the link between the two scenes as highly likely while the investigation continued.

Officials have not established a motive

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński told reporters that the suspect held radical ultranationalist views, the Associated Press reported. The Polish government said the Kraków attack was likely inspired by far-right ideology, according to Reuters. Those are officials’ early assessments; prosecutors have not announced a final motive.

Poland began two days of national mourning on Sunday. The investigation remains focused on the sequence of events, the relationship between the Kraków and Ostrowiec deaths, and the evidence behind the suspected attack.
