Reuters and the Associated Press reported the death toll and missing-person figure from Zaporizhzhia regional officials; their accounts do not amount to an independently verified casualty count. Ukraine's president said the school was used for weekly aid distribution and a shelter. Russia's Defence Ministry said it targeted Ukrainian units in the area and claimed military casualties; this account has not been independently verified. The United Nations has separately documented rising civilian casualties in the war, but the figures in this report concern this specific incident and are attributed. A school used for aid became a rescue site
At least 31 people were reported killed and more than 45 missing after a Russian strike hit a school used for humanitarian aid distribution and shelter in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian officials said. The attack took place on Monday, Nov. 2; rescue workers were still searching the rubble on Tuesday.
Reuters cited acting regional administration head Mykhailo Semikin for the toll of 31 dead, five injured and almost 50 missing. The Associated Press reported more than 45 still missing on Tuesday and said the dead included four police officers and two rescue workers, according to Semikin. These numbers are official regional estimates, not an independently verified count.
The accounts of the target conflict
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the school hosted a weekly distribution of humanitarian packages and served as a shelter because the village is close to the front line. He said the first bombs fell as people arrived, followed by a second strike on the shelter. The Reuters account of a double strike cited Ukrainian officials.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it had targeted Ukrainian military units near Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, claiming up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed. That military account and its casualty claim were not independently verified in the reports reviewed. The available accounts do not settle what was hit or establish the full sequence through independent on-site evidence.

A wider assault as talks approach
Ukraine's regional authorities declared three days of mourning. The strike came amid a broader overnight Russian attack on Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure. Zelenskyy said Russia launched 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions; AP reported that these figures came from his statement. Ukraine's energy ministry and utility DTEK reported damage and outages, while the details of the Russian Defence Ministry's separate claims about its targets remain contested.
The attack also preceded U.S.-mediated talks expected in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10–11. The proposed discussions concern security, de-escalation and humanitarian issues, according to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff; the Kremlin confirmed Russia would send a delegation. The timing does not establish how the attack will affect negotiations.
